The Eye See…Eye Learn program provides comprehensive eye exams to Junior Kindergarten students (children ages 4 and under) in participating school regions. Your local optometrist can provide these exams and they are covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (or OHIP) when you show your child’s health card. This means that there is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam (all patients 19 and under and all patients 65 and over are covered by OHIP).
If your child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive a FREE pair of donated lenses from Nikon Lenswear and a donated frame of your choice from OGI at all participating optometrist offices. The value of the frames and lenses is estimated at over $250.
The Eye See…Eye Learn program was developed to raise awareness among parents of the importance of having their children’s eyes checked upon starting school. Each year thousands of children start school without ever having an eye exam and struggle throughout the academic year to be able to see clearly.
Children whom are unable to visually focus on a picture or follow words in a book may struggle to achieve their full learning potential. Vision problems can also impact their hand-eye coordination for physical activities and even impact their social development. 80 percent of a child’s learning development comes directly through vision.
