Halloween Contact Lenses and Eye Health

With Halloween right around the corner we all love dressing in our favorite costumes. As part of your costume this year you may decide to use decorative or coloured contacts. Before using these contact lenses you should be aware of the risks they can impose on the overall health of your eyes.

Decorative and color contact lenses that are purchased without a prescription can pose a serious risk to your eye health. These risks include corneal abrasions (scratch on the surface of the eye), allergic reactions such as itchy, watering, and/or red eyes, decreased vision, infection, and potentially can lead to blindness. Before using decorative lenses, you should also be aware of the signs of an eye infection. These signs include redness, pain in the eyes that does not go away after a short period of time, and decreased vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, remove the coloured contacts immediately and contact your optometrist.

To prevent risks to your eyes, you should always consult with your optometrist before purchasing any type of coloured contacts or decorative lenses without prescription. There are many different parameters to go through before deciding on the best lens to fit your eyes. Book a consultation with your optometrist to avoid putting yourself and your eyes at risk.
